Sadly, not my favourite Ian Rutledge story. Too many characters, too confusing and frankly about fifty pages too long as I became to skim read, just to finish. I'm going to take a sabbatical from this series for a little while. Hoping the…

Although I continue to read the Insp. Rutledge books and enjoy them, this one (as some others) seems to be too complicated for its own good. And a few too many coincidences, as well. The characters are well-drawn and the story evokes the…

I really enjoyed this one, having read many of the others first. I enjoyed the slightly different atmosphere invoked--but I did get lost at times, and do not know what happened to Lewis French. Did I miss the page or pages that explained…

I have read about half of the numerous Charles Todd books and have enjoyed them very much -- except this one. As many reviewers have mentioned, the beginning went nowhere, the ending was weird and unsatisfying, and the middle used a lot…

Concludes without answering all questions about characters and their motivations. Not a good representative of the usually high caliber of mystery from the Charles Todd team.

A man is seemingly run down on a street in Chelsea and a watch on the victim leads Inspector Rutledge to a family that produces and ships Madeira and who seem to suddenly have people gone missing. While a good procedural, I missed the…

Big disappointment. Too many names, car rides, superhero fights. Too little depth of characterization and motivation.

Have read everything by Charles Todd - one of my favourite mystery writers. I love Rutledge and the time period - post WWI

I agree with the other comments, this was the worst of the Rutledge series. There was no real basis for the arrest of the so called murderers, there were no bodies !! I had to skim the last third of the book, it was too dumb to waste time…

I love the Rutledge books by Mr. Todd, but this one was a little slow at times. It seemed that Mr. Rutledge kept going around in circles. Not my favorite of the series.

I have to admit that I was a little disappointed with this latest offering in an otherwise excellent series. I felt it to be rather dull and, as others have noticed, there is a lot of Rutledge driving around here and there. I'm not…

Not the best of the series. Hamish definitely moves to the background. And Rutledge spends a lot of time jumping in and out of his car, driving around the country, and I lost track of exactly which person or clue he was pursuing. Still,…

I need to pay better attention to names. So many are thrown around in this book I had a difficult time keeping in mind who was who. Rutledge’s grace and gentle tact are in full force here, and his charm goes a long way to making up for any…

I could only get through 2/3 of this book, during which time Rutledge drove back and forth between London, Essex, and Surrey tracking suspects for the PRESUMED murder of two men. But, no one had found the bodies, nor were they looking for…
