"No one steps on Archer land. Not if they value their life. But when Meredith Hayes overhears a plot to burn the Archer brothers off their ranch, a long-standing debt compels her to take the risk. Years of constant vigilance harden a man. Yet when Travis Archer comes across a female trespasser with the same vivid blue eyes as the courageous young girl he once aided, he can't bring himself to send her away. And when an act of sacrifice leaves her injured and her reputation in shreds, gratitude and guilt prompt him to attempt to rescue her once again. Despite the fact that Travis is no longer the gallant youth Meredith once dreamed about, she vows to stand by his side. But will love ever be hers? Or will Travis always see her as merely a short-straw bride?"--P. [4] of cover.

I really enjoyed reading this historical romance, the first of a series following four unique and engaging brothers, from Karen Witemeyer. Travis, the eldest Archer brother, is devoted to his family and his land - but he doesn't like strangers. Reclusive and suspicious, the brothers are drawn into an unexpected fight for their land when a lovely young woman risks her life to warn them of a dangerous plan to steal their land. Merideth Hayes, however, is determined to help the unfriendly band of brothers in return for their help many years before. Meri longs to catch Travis' attention, but it seems he will always put his brothers and his family's heritage first. Will unexpected danger and alliances change both their lives forever?
Well written and engaging, Witemeyer's story is a fun read with unexpectedly deep character development and focus on a growth in faith and courage. Although a tad bit long, I enjoyed getting to know the characters and will certainly be looking forward to reading Stealing the Preacher (Archer Brothers book 2).

This was my second time through this one, and it stands up to time. Adorable and heartfelt, and I'm reminded why this author is one of my favorites. If you're looking for a cowboy novel with a delightful cast of characters and a hefty dollop of action, this is the right book for you!

Loved it.

I had mixed feelings about Short-Straw Bride, most of which thankfully resolved themselves by the end of the book. It reminds me a lot of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, in setting, tone, and plot. The action picked up late in the book and by the end I was very curious to find out what would happen. It resolved itself nicely. The jury is still out as to Travis’s method of getting the short straw...I’m glad he owned up to it but kind of wish the brothers could have handled it differently.

For the first half of this book, I was in love. It was one of the best I'd read in a long time. Every page had me laughing or holding my breath. I'm not Christian, but it was light spirituality peppered through that I could enjoy. Well....I was extremely disappointed for the last half of the book. Around the time of the wedding, the plot entirely fell apart and began dragging forward and back. The author couldn't pick one disaster and stick with it, so there was a new one every chapter. Worst of all the characters started acting like dimwits. Even the way the Scripture passages were being interpreted stopped making sense. I think it was a very clear case of writer's block and needing to make a deadline. I tried to kind of imagine it was a choose-your-own-ending. I'm tempted to see if her other books are better, but afraid to find out.

This was a fantastic book by Witemeyer. The plot and characters are very fun. I have enjoyed all of Karen's books. Her motto that the world needs more happily-ever-afters is very true. Witemeyer's stories combine adventure, suspense, Texas settings, great morals, and loveable characters. For Witemeyer fans, Short-Straw Bride is the first installment in the Archer Brothers series.

I would say that this book was engaging, hooking, and kept me at the edge of my seat. With the exception that Travis swears in it, with it excluded, I would easily say that it was an ok read. I don't personally enjoy explicit material books and Old West romance books, or any book for that matter, are fine without it. God bless!
