Meet Tom Gates - a master of excuses, an expert doodler, a comic story writer extraordinaire, and the bane of his teacher's existence!

In this recent recipient of the 2011 Roald Dahl Funny Prize, readers will find an honest, silly and laugh-out-loud book in the format of Tom's battered homework diary, crammed full of his scribbles and stories.

And in his wacky journal, you'll find all sorts of comic craziness to make you groan with glee! Hear about Tom's worst holiday ever ("camping sucks") and the time his parents went to parents' evening ("groan"). Tom's battered homework diary is crammed with his scribbles and stories, cartoons and ideas - as well as comments from the long-suffering Mr. Fullerman.

Warning! Do not attempt to read this in public. You will laugh loudly!

This is such a funny book and I love how Mr. Fullerman has beady eyes. I also hate kids like marcus

This is a great book for reluctant readers. It is funny and easy to read. It is full of humorous illustrations and doodles, allegedly by Tom himself. Tom Gates is certainly a flawed hero and his behaviour is sometimes a bit sketchy, but many kids will identify with mischievous Tom as he makes excuses for failing to do his homework and teases his older sister. Some of Tom's mishaps and escapades were certainly hilarious. This is the first book in a series, and readers will be glad to know there are many more books about Tom Gates.

I really liked this book. It was funny and creative. I especially loved the doodles!
I would love to read all the books in the series.

The title character surprised me by acting a lot like the British Dennis the Menace. He is quite mean to his sister and also a particular classmate, and evades homework and other responsibilities whenever possible. Kinda like if "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" was all about the mean older brother.

Reading Level: grade 4. Interest Level: ages 9-12. Winner of the 2011 Roald Dahl Funny Prize, Tom Gates is tailor made for readers who just can’t get enough of Diary of a Wimpy Kid. 10 year-old Tom lives to annoy his sister, avoid his homework, and impress his classmate, Amy Porter. He also keeps an exercise book full of doodles and thoughts on these and any other subject that springs to mind, including Mrs. Worthington’s moustache.
