"After" is the first in a series of New Adult (or NA, for short; books written about and for the 18-22 college crowd, content is generally more mature than YA) romances. It started as fanfic on Wattpad, then was pulled and rewritten for publication (and $$$).

I've heard a lot of young women in the target age group rave about these books, but this "hero" has more red flags than a beach with a riptide current. Toxic relationships are bad. Controlling relationships are bad. Cruel guys are abusers. There's nothing romantic about that, however often we play up and sell the "bad boy romantic hero". The plot was repetitive and Tessa gasped as often as Fifty Shades' Anastasia said "oh my" or referenced her "inner goddess".

There are better New Adult romances, such as those by Colleen Hoover, Abbi Glines, Courtney Cole, Mila Gray, and Tammara Webber.

It hurts so much about the ending. I feel really sorry for Tessa. All of girls, remember, love is important in life, but it is not the only thing we pursue in life.

This book is amazing. A bad boy and a good girls bring fantasies to me that make me want to read more. I’m 15, I don’t suggest reading this book if your anything below 14, because it includes some sexual scenes. It is a true romantic, it makes me want to speak to the characters. Really be with them, and go through this with them. If your looking for a hot drama book, this one is for you!

I would describe "After" as confusing, explicit, and problematic. The story comes from Wattpad, an online writing community. It started as a Harry Styles fan-fiction, and I won't even begin to talk about what I think about that whole situation. There are many points in this book where I was just flat out disgusted with how in-detail Anna Todd was with her description of things the characters do to each other. In addition to that, this book was made for younger girls, and one of the characters is extremely toxic and an awful example of a good boyfriend. Anna defends her book saying that "he's not supposed to be a good example of a boyfriend" but something about that doesn't sit right with me. This is a book for younger girls, there's no need for an abusive boyfriend to be so strongly portrayed. Aside from this, I didn't really enjoy Anna's writing style, but that's different for everyone. It wasn't awful, but I really didn't like this book. Overall, 2/5. @peraltiago4ever of the Hamilton Public Library Teen Review Board

This book is incredibly difficult to rate. As many reviewers before me have noted, there are so many things that are problematic with this book. The dialogue is whiny and repetitive, the relationship between Hardin and Tessa is borderline abusive, and the twist at the end was not at all original…and yet it kept me up reading late into the night. I can’t really explain it. It cast some sort of weird spell over me. Maybe because the plot is a smutty amalgamation of two of my favorite 90’s flicks, or maybe because the “hot bad boy falling for the good girl” formula is catnip for the avid romance reader. Whatever it is, it kept me turning pages, all 582 of them. I generally read 2-3 books at a time, but all the other books I am currently reading were set aside to finish this one. I have already told myself that I need to finish the ARCs I am currently reading before I even think about reading the next book in this series, but like Tessa and Hardin, I may not be able to resist.

I read this for 7 hours straight! I could not put it down! Love it! Ps - do not watch the movie, it’s horrible! So many scenes cut and lack of character building. The book is 1000% better. I had no knowledge of Anna Todd, the hype of this book or the movie so I went in with no expectations, just a book with a nice looking cover haha! Winner!

Absolutely amazing. The novels are so realistic and unique. The bet is the most exciting plot twist. Highly recommend!
