At what point does a girl stop fighting for her life?"--

Somewhat interesting but definitely depressing throughout, with ending that simply piles it on.

Some chapters were written in italics. Whenever I thought I knew why that was so, I was proven wrong. I finished the whole book and still have no idea why some were written that way. I see other reviewers had similar problems, so we must be onto something. I stopped trying to figure it out after a while and just focused on the story.

I picked that book up a few years ago, but was unable to finish it. But I had it in an electronic format, so I thought that was what ultimately kept me from reading it. When it came recommended again, I saw it as a sign and decided to try again. It was rough. I forced myself to finish it this time.

What the book does well is show how a tragedy affects those who are left behind. It seemed like the girl was to be a focal point of the story, yet she was not. The brother and the father were. The mother seems to be barely mentioned here and there.

Had some good points, but overall, nothing special.

I am an avid reader of all sorts of genre, although suspense is not usually something I read. I have to say this book is EXCELLENT! I could not put it down and was reading til 2 a.m. The writing was not Nobel prizeworthy but very very interesting story. The characters were well written and well rounded. A book I highly recommend!

This read took my attention at the beginning with the situation & certainly a well known location. The manner in which the author wrote conversations confused me as to who was speaking, finally I had to ignore that aspect, skim forward & get on with the storyline. The characters were well drawn, complex & often very unlikable. For me is enforces that one can never get past worry of your loved ones. Evil abounds, people disappear, often never to be recovered. This might make a parent never allow the child to leave home.

Hmmm. I’m trying to understand the attraction to this story and author as so many have mentioned. It’s not that it was a bad book; it just didn’t have any great suspense or out of the ordinary experience.
Like others, I also had to re-read a few paragraphs to understand who the author was referring to or who was talking. It does jump around between characters and their lives, so that was a bit disjointed.

Read this book. It had me reading deep into the night to find out how it ended. The next morning, I had to recap it to my friend and loan it out to another friend. This is a book that was lent to me and I am determined to lend it out over and over again. Not only is the story gripping, but the author's craft - symbolism, metaphor, and foreshadowing, make it a magical work of literature rarely found in a mystery novel (anymore). Just read it and prepare to finish the last 70+ pages in one night.

Although a little hard to follow at the beginning because of multiple timelines, I made myself slow down and enjoy the wonderful writing of Mr. Johnston.

When I first read the jacket description I wondered if I should even be reading this book, but it was a good and interesting book and so I kept on until the end. But I really wish I would have left this one alone. Left me feeling too sad.

Really enjoyed this book - extremely well written. Looks at the family and their reaction to losing their daughter to what they do not know. The never give up looking for her and missing her. This book has an ending you never saw coming. Engrossing until the end.
