Father Quixote, a descendant of Don Quixote (it's told, even though Don Quixote is a fictional character) lives in a village. He helps a Bishop having car trouble along a highway and not long after, he's promoted to be a Monsignor. Father Quixote's friend, the mayor of the village (nicknamed Sancho of course) and a communist, is voted out of office.

Together, Father (now Monsignor) Quixote and the ex-mayor travel to Madrid to purchase the purple socks, etc., required to be worn by a Monsignor.

The novel is a road trip in Father Quixote's car, of course named Rosinante.

Much of the novel is a dialog between the two men discussing religious, philosophical, and of course communist values.

A TV movie was made of this novel in 1985 (and on PBS TV's Great Performances in 1987), starring Alec Guinness and Leo McKern, that is highly recommended (by me), if you can find it.
