There are some funny parts if you can get past Greta Gerwig's extraordinarily annoying character.

Extremely funny, tho' not a complete success. Greta Gerwig talks a mile a minute as the supremely self-possessed main character, and it struck me that Stillman must have conceived this role with Chloe Sevigny in mind (they'd worked so well together on "Last Days of Disco," although by 2011 CS was no longer the right age to be a college junior). Gerwig, however, fits perfectly within Stillman's controlled madness. The movie, alas, runs out of steam in the final 40 minutes or so, and the aggressively ugly young man cast at Gerwig's love interest doesn't help at all. The picture gets so disjointed, while staying assertively satirical, that it's almost like Stillman's idea of an early Godard movie, a la A Woman is a Woman. Like that early '60s film, Damsels in Distress struggles along as an almost-musical. Stillman clearly wants there to be singing and dancing -- of which there's a little. His failure to carry it through -- is that the movie's real subject?? Almost everything else plays like window dressing. And his naive ideas about what constitutes joy are kind of sweet -- if one doesn't overthink them. Maybe Stillman should relax and let some of his suit-wearing males grow beards.

i didn't enjoy this film which i purchased for 2 bucks and eventually brought to third place books to sell to, but they don't purchase dvds, so i went downstairs to the library, and the public bathroom, on the way. i'll never leave my possessions outside the door in the little hallway again, as when i returned to them after a swift pee, the dvds were missing. surely the crossroads bookstore would have given me 50 cents, as lately greta has become rather famous. when, i wonder, are the stories going to surface about the sex abuse cases in Hollywood between up- and- coming females and established lesbians? let's bring it all out of the closet, ladies and gentlemen!

This one was a random borrow, and I was pleasantly surprised how much I liked it. Some might call it a chick-flik, and while it is a British Rom-Com, that doesn't mean it's not enjoyable for both genders. The actor and actresses have real chemistry, the humor is fun and witty, and even the production crew has fun with the audience at the end.

Back in 1988, there was a movie called Heathers that handled a similar subject matter better. It was both darker and funnier. In Damsels, Greta Gerwig is about the only saving grace with her quirky charm. This movie plods along not sure what story it's trying to tell. It's a peek into campus life where the young males are either complete idiots or borderline sociopaths. Meanwhile, otherwise intelligent and attractive young women students fall for them. Is this a male fantasy movie for men who ask themselves, "How stupid and/or insensitive can I be and still get the girl?"

Quirky humor but I can't recommend this because it doesn't hold together. Especially at the end, it feels like the director walked off and someone just pieced together some bits. Not clear what they were trying to convey.

Probably Stillman's most accessible movie, given the number of actual jokes, but also full of his usual subtle brilliance. Those who demand a strong plot, however, should probably skip it.

This is Whit Stillman's first film in twelve years. I enjoyed his earlier films, but this one was cringe-inducing.
