A wave of kidnappings sweeps through Mexico City spreading panic among its wealthier citizens. John Creasy is a burned-out ex-CIA assassin who has given up on life. Creasy's friend Rayburn brings him to Mexico City to be a bodyguard to nine-year-old Pita Ramos. Pita is the daughter of industrialist Samuel Ramos and his wife Lisa. Creasy is not interested in being a bodyguard, especially to a young girl, but he accepts the assignment. Slowly, Pita chips away at Creasy's seemingly impenetrable exterior, his defenses drop, and he opens up to her. Then Pita is kidnapped and Creasy is seriously wounded. He vows to kill anyone involved in or profiting from the kidnapping.

Anytime Denzel Washington is one of the main characters in a movie, I know it will be good. The Man on Fire is action packed, sad and happy moments all packed into one show.

There is nothing you haven't seen before. It's entertaining enough as a violent revenge movie to turn your brain off if that's all you're looking for. Denzel Washington as usual delivers well in this type of role. Mexico City was a cool setting for the movie. It starts off nicely. You see the bodyguard starting to bond with the family he is assigned to protect and feeling like he has a chance for redemption. But when the killing starts he is over the top sadistic in a way that didn't seem to fit his character for me. Maybe I just wanted to see him become noticeably unhinged but besides the violence he has exactly the same demeanor as at the start of the movie. The way it ended was also unsatisfying and didn't fit the relentless no holds barred type of movie this was up until that point.

This is a 2004 American action thriller directed by Tony Scott.
This is the second adaptation of A. J. Quinnell's 1980 novel of the same name as the first film adaptation was made in 1987.
Although it appears like a docudrama, it is almost a fiction.
20th Century Fox wanted the film to be set in Italy.
An early draft of the film script was set in Naples.
Scott argued that if the setting would be Italy, then the film would have to be a period piece, since by the 2000s kidnappings became a rare occurrence in Italy.
Mexico City became the setting of the 2004 film because Mexico City had a high kidnapping rate.
As a result, the character Rika Balletto was renamed Lisa Martin Ramos, and Pinta Balletto was renamed Lupita "Pita" Ramos.
Ettore Balletto became Samuel Ramos.
Robert De Niro was originally offered the role of Creasy.
Prior to his death, Marlon Brando was the original choice to play Rayburn.
Although Denzel Washington plays the protagonist superbly, sadistic pleasure he takes in the killings is disgusting!
Apparently, the scriptwiter is to blame.
Nobody likes harming people sadistically.

I thought this was a terrible movie. Meg Ryan wasn't even credible when she kept calling out orders. Why did she they even cast her in that role? And as for Lou Diamond Phillips, all I kept thinking about was "La Bamba."
It's unfortunate that war can have such a destructive power on people. They are never the same again when they see so many maimed and killed; their psyche changes completely.

"He's an artist of death, and he's about to paint his masterpiece." Note: there are no actual men on fire in this film.

This is a great action/thriller. Washington nails the tough as nails bent but not broken mercenary/bodyguard anti-hero. You watch as this great relationship forms and get emotionally involved and then the fireworks ensue. Very graphic. Very Tony Scott looking movie (i.e. very stylish and unique look) with good acting and very good violence. Similar to Taken, but a whole lot more lead up and a whole lot more graphic.

Terrific movie. The chemistry between Denzel and Dakota was magic. Great locale in Mexico City also. Wait for the line "Creasy's art is death and he is just about to paint his masterpeice, " LOL! You know the bad guys are going to pay the price.

Watch this to look for Matt Damon's transformation. It's incredible to see the dedication he put into that role.
