Bee is an orphan, alone in a poor, crumbling kingdom. In desperation, she steals a bun from a bakery. To Bee's surprise, the baker offers her a place at his shop. As she learns to bake, Bee discovers that she has a magical power. When a new friend desperately needs her help against an evil mage, Bee wonders what a small orphan girl with only a small bit of magic can do. Bee's journey to help her friend becomes a journey to save the kingdom, and a discovery of the meaning of family.

Add a CommentThis book is an amazing debut, starting off with young Bee finding a home in the bakery, and discovering her prowess as a slightly magical baker, and continues on with amazing world-building and characters. Bee discovers new friends and the truth of an evil mage's dastardly plot, finally fleeing in the hopes of protecting her friend from danger. Together, the three friends journey and land on a pirate ship, meeting the amusing and wonderful character Captain Zay (my personal favorite), and bake for the rowdy crew. They linger for several weeks in bliss, and then upon finding long-lost-fathers sail back to their home and confront the mastermind behind the evil plot. A sincerely good read for ALL ages, filled to the brim of sparkling wit, well-minded, cultivated plots, humor, warm, funny, and relatable characters. and mouthwatering descriptions of many an excellent confection pastry. You will not regret reading this book
Such an enchanted and "delicious" book (to quote another reader). It reminds me of the pirates and wonderful recipes of CINNAMON AND GUNPOWDER, but with imaginative wizardry and moss maidens. This is a book to embrace with the imagination, hope and daring of youth. Helpings of reality, human frailty, disappointment and compassion are mixed in to offset the sweetness, making this book a natural movie script.
