I nearly quit this film (and that would be a horror first for me). It's pretty messed up. It wasn't anything to do with special effects, it was the character actions and re-actions. I read a plot summary and decided to stick to the end of it. This is not standard Hollywood. I'd give it another watch to see if I can piece the plot together as I go but I'm not sure I can handle it again this soon. Definitely not "fun" horror.

Family is hell; am I right? But I bet you'll be glad the family in Hereditary is not yours.
The film is slow, atmospheric, creepy, and good news -- no stupid jump scares! But there's always something lurking in the shadows, or at the corner of the frame. Don't go in expecting a conventional horror film, or a conventional film period. If it can find a different way to tell a story, it will. Heredity is also a family drama, and even has touches of humour. The dislocation is emphasized by slight distortions in the sets. At times, you will not be sure if you're looking at a full-sized house or a model. There will be explanations by the end, but Hereditary can be watched multiple times, from multiple perspectives (see videos). I gave it less than five stars is because of the ending, partly because it's conventional compared to what went before, and partly because it IS an ending. In this world, the horror would go on and on.

There are not enough words to describe the beauty of this movie. What begins as a narrative of family dysfunction and the inability to process grief spirals into a horrifying, gore filled nightmare. This movie will crawl into the recesses of your brain and alight new fear of attics, dark corners, and miniature figurines.

One of the more disturbing films in recent memory. Really well done and really well acted. This film is one of the few that I kept thinking about for several days afterwards. No easy answers or neat wrap up in the end either.

I saw this the first time in the theater, then watched it on Netflix with some friends. It was just as scary the second time, even knowing what was coming, as it had been the first. The film is well done, paced perfectly, and doesn't offer any happy endings. From the first scene to the last the viewer is kept on the edge of their seat. Toni Collette is magnificent as the slightly unhinged mom and Gabriel Byrne tries desperately to hold his family together. Not for the squeamish.

One of the few horror films to truly terrify me and make me upset for days. I watch a lot of horror, and I definitely anticipate Ari's next film(s)- as he has a keen sense for directing, cinematography, and artistic vision. I love that this was also nominated for Best Screenplay for the 2019 Bram Stoker Awards.

Written and directed by Ari Aster in 2018, this American horror drama depicts the mysterious events that happen after the death of their secretive grandmother.
Although the performances of the major actors appear quite plausible, the story seems profoundly ridiculous and unbelievable so that I quit vieweing when the glass moves by itself and a piece of chalk scribbles some words on the tiny blackboard.
I don't like this kind of scientifically inexplainable and unreasonable movies at all.

Scariest movie I've seen in some time. I did have to research it on line to fully understand it and then I watched it again. When a movie, like this one, can keep you thinking about it long after you've seen it, well, that's some movie. Toni Collette does deserve an Oscar.

Annie: I never wanted to be your mother.

Peter: Why?

Annie: I was scared. I didn't feel like a mother. But she pressured me.

Peter: Then why did you have me?

Annie: It wasn't my fault! I tried to stop it.

Peter: How?

Annie: I tried to have a miscarriage.

Peter: How?

Annie: However I could. I did everything they told me not to do, but it didn't work. I'm happy it didn't work.

Peter: You tried to kill me.

Annie: No, I love you!

Peter: [crying] Why did you try to kill me?

Annie: I didn't! I was trying to save you!
