"An unforgettableand Hollywood-boundnew thriller...A mix of Hitchcockian suspense, Agatha Christie plotting, and Greek tragedy."
Entertainment Weekly

Promising to be the debut novel of the season The Silent Patient is a shocking psychological thriller of a woman's act of violence against her husband—and of the therapist obsessed with uncovering her motive...

Alicia Berenson's life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London's most desirable areas. One evening her husband Gabriel returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face, and then never speaks another word.

Alicia's refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety. The price of her art skyrockets, and she, the silent patient, is hidden away from the tabloids and spotlight at the Grove, a secure forensic unit in North London.

Theo Faber is a criminal psychotherapist who has waited a long time for the opportunity to work with Alicia. His determination to get her to talk and unravel the mystery of why she shot her husband takes him down a twisting path into his own motivations—a search for the truth that threatens to consume him....

W O W - haven't had such a great read in a long time!!! Every page was enjoyable and I finished it within a day and a half. Really couldn't put it down. The characters ---even the one who doesn't talk --- are well-developed. The whole time, I was wondering what happened and why it was necessary to give so much background on the Alicia. It made perfect sense after the twist was revealed. A pretty sad story once you put yourself in her shoes. The story ended well and every loose bits was wrapped up. Will probably re-read again!

Didn't finish. Got to page 174 but it didn't grab me. Had no empathy for the characters.

4 stars. Alicia is a painter married to the perfect man, living a perfect life. So why would she tie her husband to a chair and shoot him in the face 5 times? After Gabriel's death, Alicia doesn't speak. Confined to an institution, she is still silent, not talking to anyone. Until a new psychotherapist arrives. Theo feels he needs to make her speak. Coming from a similar backstory, he feels he knows what Alicia went through and that he alone can make her talk. If he can get her to speak, he can find out what happened on that day. This was a very good thriller with enough to keep me turning the pages in interest, and a few surprising twists at the end. A very good read. I enjoyed this book.

Didn't get very far with this, surprised to see such positive reviews!

I can't fairly say I didn't like this book because I read it in just a few days. It was certainly compelling. I just wasn't a fan of the way the "twist" was executed.

Could not wait in line for library loan so I bought the Kindle version. Great buy!! Suspenseful and had me guessing wrong at every plot twist. Can’t wait for more from this writer

I agree -- over-hyped & not that special -- & the writing is awkward in places. But the author shows promise & I would certainly read his next effort.

I really liked this novel. It is well written, a good story, and lots of psychology which I love.
I always check out the author photo, credentials, education etc before I indulge to make sure the novel is not just mass market stuff. This is good.

I agree with a couple of the other reviewers - this is way over-hyped and nothing special. Yes, there's a plot twist near the end, but that's not enough to make up for so-so writing, shallow characters, and clunky plotting.

Disappointing ending - twist came out of left field and was pretty unsatisfying
