Why do some authors insist on recording their own works? Vanity? A wish to make more money by not paying a voice actor? This is a great story but Kingsolver's reading of it is like a preschool teacher reading aloud to her toddler class. I kept waiting for a Raffi or Sharon, Lois and Bram song!!!

While I very much enjoyed the book, Kingsolver is not the best reader of her own work. I found her voice to be quite flat and it took away from my enjoyment of the CDs. Ended up checking out the book and just read it myself.

I was unable to finish this book. Not what I usually experience from a Barbara Kingsolver book!

Interesting about Diego Rivera and Frida Khalo, the McCarthy hearings and the suspicion of all things connected to a whiff of Communism back in the '50's.

Not being a fan of folklore, this book just wasn't for me. Beautifully narrated though.

Kinsolver's accents are irritating, especially when she makes a 14 year old boy sound so much younger. But when she gets to the last section it's nice to hear her voicing of Violet Brown, who shares the author's background.
I agree that the main character is boring.

It is not often I don't finish a book. This was one of them. I have enjoyed all previous work of Barbara Kingsolver's that I have read, but this one almost put me to sleep driving thru the Whitemud construction zone. I'm not sure if it was just the topic not being of interest or it was the reading of it that bored me.
