A catastrophe of unparalled scale and magnitude overwhelmed the entire globe, causing half the population of the Earth to perish, leaving behind vivid remnants of devastation at numerous locations around the world. 14 year old Shinji Ikari was called out to Tokyo 3 by his father whom he has not met for a long time. At Tokyo 3, he is driven to the headquarters of the special government agency NERV to meet his father, who immediately orders Shinji to pilot Evangelion Unit One and fight against the Angel which is destroying the city. While Shinji resisted at first, the sight of an injured female pilot - Rei Ayanami is enough to make him decide he would not run away from this challenge and agrees to engage the enemy at hand. With the fate of the world resting on his shoulders, how will the 14 year old boy Shinji fight?

note for anyone planning to check this out in the future:
Someone scratched the movie disc to the point that it skips not seconds, but minutes ahead. Worst part is that whoever did this incidentally scratched it worse at the film's critical moments. We need a new copy of this at the Johnson County Libraries. Until then, I would suggest buying a copy for yourself, considering that the DVD is rather inexpensive.
(Whoever put a hold on this DVD, Don't say I didn't warn you!)

It was O.K for a home TV movie. I was entertained and interesting. But it was NOT worth the long library wait or the price to rent from a Red Box.

It's a nearly exact replica of the first episodes of Evangelion, with just enough differences in dialogue to infuriate diehards. Definitely worth watching.

This is the first feature length film in the "reboot" of the Evangelion series with overall direction by the original director, Hideaki Anno. The cels have been remastered for HD video and some 3D CG elements have been added.

Technically, the picture and sound are awesome, especially compared with the original source material. I am not a fan of 3D animation mixed with traditional cel drawings, but this movie pulls it off as well as I've ever seen it.

From a fan's perspective, this movie is very true to the original story. This movie encompasses the events of the first 5-7 episodes of the series, all the way to the 5th angel's appearance and defeat. Being a huge fan of the original, I think this release includes all the pertinent information needed to keep the story on-track, and adds a few extra scenes that help flesh-out the story for someone who may be new to the EVA universe. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and I cannot wait to finish the next three.
