So Phantom Menace is an interesting film. Released sixteen years after Return of the Jedi, everybody was excited to see the return of Star Wars to theaters and see the path that led Anakin Skywalker to become Darth Vader. As a film it's decent enough. The plot and battle sequences aren't bad, the dated cgi in older DVD versions let it down a little, the music is excellent. The biggest problem is that it wasn't the Star Wars fans expected. I admit, we could've done without Jar Jar, though he does fit into the plot. He probably could've been toned down a bit. The battles are well done, and the Duel between Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan and Darth Maul is very well done. Does it hold up? Sort of. I've heard the visual quality on the Blu-Ray is better. It's fun for EU/Legends fans to try and spot recognizable background species on Tatooine. Overall it's an okay movie and is necessary to the bigger picture of the prequels. Star Wars fans will always be divided over it, so go ahead and give it a whirl.
