This is a dense graphic medieval adventure, a heist story set during the eradication of the Templar order. Unlike most stories involving the Templars this one isn't so much a conspiracy as the real history, spun slightly for fun. From the author's preface: ----- "Then, one October dawn in 1307, the King of France ordered the simultaneous mass arrest of all Templars in his kingdom--15,000 of them, from the lowliest serving brother to the Grand Master himself. The Templars were hauled before the Inquisition and accused of witchcraft, heresy, sodomy--the most evil crimes in their world. It's as if the FBI were to raid the U.S. Marines, confiscate their weapons and assets, and arrest every soldier on charges of treason and terrorism." ----- Martin is one the rank and file soldiers who manages to slip through the cracks and survive as a fugitive in hiding. Then he discovers that the order's treasure is hidden in a secret vault somewhere and decides he'll steal it from the French King as a way of getting vengeance. He finds a few like-minded companions, and the adventure begins. ----- An excellent balance of weighty, serious history with fun storytelling, and top notch illustrations from Pham and Puvilland. A most worthy read.
