This charming story is an allegory about inclusiveness and how fear of the unknown often drives the creation and persecution of "others". Linus Baker is a social worker who assesses the state of orphanages run by a corporation for the care and management of magical youth. When he is sent by extremely upper management to a remote island on assignment, his life slowly changes. Although written for adults, this book could easily be incorporated into a discussion for high school students. I could also see this novel as a movie with its almost endless costuming possibilities.
