A familiar yet endearing story of a troubled, young musician dreaming of something bigger than the New Jersey suburbs that both weigh her down and help form her identity. Without better care, Patti Cake$ might feel played out, but strong performances from Danielle MacDonald in the titular role, Bridget Everett as her trainwreck mom, and the supporting cast that round out Pattiā€™s rap ensemble, give the movie the heart to keep audiences engaged in this underdog story.
